Termite Mound Monoculture

"Monoculture of Termite Mounds" is a site-specific installation initially conceptualized for the 2020 Horizons-Sancy "Arts-Nature Call." The project consists of creating termite mounds from ceramic Udu drums instruments and ceramic cylinders, scattered across a grass field. Mimicking a common sight in cattle grazing pastures in Brazil, the space invites participants to interact by picking up the udus and playing them.

Termite mounds serve as bioindicators for compacted ground. They appear in nature as attempts to create small tunnels in the earth for breathing. When the ground is decompacted, plants can grow more easily, allowing their roots to penetrate the soil.
